i apologise for not updating sooner!
on the 25th of august, i ’slipped’ and fell. i noticed that i was having more than a little trouble standing and that my leg was quickly swelling. it turns out i had broken my fibula, dislocated my ankle, and torn my deltoid ligament. i had to have surgery that night to repair my ankle. i’m now ‘enjoying’ week five of my six weeks of doctor mandated bedrest.
if you’d like toget a better idea of what was done…
first visual aid: the bone with the arrow on it for 1 is a fibula. i broke mine between the arrows for 3 & 4. when that happened, the ankle (marked by 6 & 8 ) dislocated into the ‘hole’ caused by the break. the dislocation caused the deltoid ligament to tear.
second visual aid: going in through the outside of my ankle, my doctor placed a plate similar to this along the break and then placed several screws in order to fuse the plate with the bone.
third visual aid: the doctor then inserted screws through the fibula and into the tibia. this is to keep you immobilised to allow for healing. if weight is put on the screws, it can cause fractures to both bones. it also hurts… a lot.
fourth visual aid: the doctor then went through the inside of my ankle to repair my torn deltoid ligament by pinning the pieces back into place.
fifth visual aid: this is fairly similar to how it looks at the moment on both sides of my leg under the cast.
sixth visual aid: when healed, i will be left with a similar scar.
i am going to have to have at least 1 more surgery (to remove the screws going through the fibula into the tibia). the plate and screws attached to the side of my fibula will remain.

Hey! OMG I know exactly what your going through! I went sledding and tried to stop from going into the tree with my right leg and broke my fibula in whats called a spiral break. Anyway, I did that on Feb. 24, ‘08 and have been laid up ever since. I first had a cast up to my hip, last week I got that off and now I have one below my knee for 6 weeks. Then I get a walking boot for 4 weeks!
Hope your legs heeling!
